Who?
We are always looking for new things and progression in the industry, when we heard our good friends started Alaska Backcountry Guides, based in the Chugach Mountains outside of Valdez, Alaska, we had to hop on board. ABG is located in the free ride mecca of Thompson Pass, the birth place of modern day Alaskan heli skiing. While ABG is relatively new, they employ some of the most veteran guides in the range, bringing a new look at heli skiing, with an experienced eye. When?
Prime heli ski season is the months of March and April. This season seems short compared to your standard ski season because it is. Before March, the days are short and the weather typically stormy, after April the days get too long and the temps too warm. Between the months of March and April, is when the stars align for longer days, cold temps and better weather. Packages run weekly, just pick a week and we can go from there!
Why ABG?
ABG doesn’t go off of number of runs or amount of vertical feet, they operate on total fly time. So instead of purchasing a pre set number of runs or feet, you purchase hours of fly time. You can think of this as the odometer of the helicopter, when its in a moving motion the clock is ticking. We can usually get 6-8 runs for each hour of accumulated fly time (fly time is purchased by the hour). We refer to this model as “exploratory heli skiing” so instead of having set runs close to home, we can explore farther out into more unique landscapes. This enables us more freedom with runs and provide a very unique experience usually reserved for private groups or film crews.
